Teens Overcoming Grief After Suicide Teens Overcoming Grief After Suicide meets weekly for 7-weeks several times throughout the year to help 13-19-year-old youth grieve a suicide loss.

Grief is a universal experience. It is a normal, healthy response to loss. If you have ever experienced it, you know grief can be a difficult process. This process can be more challenging when it happens during a time of our lives when we are already experiencing other changes (like adolescence). Additionally, suicide is a complex loss because one has to grieve a loss that was caused by the decision of the individual to take their own life.

The stigma surrounding suicide can also complicate the grieving process for many reasons, including intensifying the emotions that one may not expect to experience surrounding a loved one’s death such as guilt, blame, shame, anger, fear and/or relief, etc.) and can often cause people to feel uncomfortable seeking comfort from others in talking about their loss like they would when a loved one dies from other causes such as natural death, an accident, or a long term illness.

Many adult suicide loss survivors find comfort in seeking others who have shared a similar loss due to this stigma, and Teens Overcoming Grief After Suicide is a 7-week support group that is just for youth 13-19 who have lost a family member or friend to suicide.

Teens meet with others who are the same age to share their grief, experiences and learn coping skills after the loss of a family member, friend, neighbor, co-worker, or another person of significance in their lives. Like our 7-week Surviving After Suicide workshop for adults, Teens Overcoming Grief After Suicide is curriculum-based with structured group learning activities and a specific curriculum tailored to teens.

Fridays 3:30 pm PT / 4:30 pm MT / 5:30 pm CT / 6:30 pm ET

Upcoming Sessions:

Currently, all upcoming sessions of Teens Overcoming Grief After Suicide will be held via Zoom, and in order to participate, members will be required to use a camera and microphone during each meeting.

  • February 4, 2022 – March 18, 2022 – Registration for this session is now closed
  • June 3, 2022 – July 22, 2022 – Registration opens March 1, 2022
  • October 7, 2022 – November 11, 2022 – Registration opens July 1, 2022

$75/7-week session includes the cost of course materials, all in-class activities, and snacks (when the group is held in person)

Please note: Our groups are not a substitute for medical treatment or professional therapy. Our peer facilitators have shared similar life experiences to those in the groups they facilitate and have gone through both peer facilitator and suicide intervention skills gatekeeper training (QPR). Many of our facilitators are also Adult and/or Youth Mental Health First Aid, safeTALK and/or ASIST certified. Our facilitator’s role is not to diagnose or treat members of the group, but to introduce potential meeting topics, help guide the flow of the group’s conversation, ensure the group remains a safe space for members to heal, start and end group on time (and make sure it stays on schedule) and to help teach basic coping skills to aid in the healing process.
