Hope After Suicide Online Support for Adult Suicide Loss Survivors


A loved one’s suicide is a devastating event for his/her family members, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances. It creates intense, confusing, and long-lasting grief.

We know that grief from the suicide of a loved one is complicated. “What if’s,” “if only’s,” “could of’s,” and “should of’s” are often present in the minds of those left behind after a suicide death. The relationships of loved ones who are mourning may be strained by differences in the way they grieve, sometimes leading to further anguish. For these reasons, many of us seek help to try to resolve questions, issues involving suicide and to find peace.

There are many different resources available for survivors of suicide to help them resolve their grief. This can include individual professional counseling, grief groups, workshops and conferences, books and articles on grief and suicide, talking about the loss with friends and family, and suicide loss survivor support groups. One or more of those options might make sense for most survivors.

Hope After Suicide is a free online peer-facilitated support group for any individual 18 and older who needs help resolving grief from suicide. (Please see here if you are looking for a support group for youth ages 13-19). The trained volunteers who facilitate our support group have each experienced a suicide loss and have had the time to process and work through their grief to a level where they feel they can be helpful to others. As facilitators, their role in the group is to ensure each meeting starts and ends on time, to guide the flow of discussion, and to ensure the environment remains a safe space for everyone present. Our facilitators do not diagnose or treat members of the group and our support groups are not a substitute for medical treatment or professional therapy.

During our meetings, members provide mutual support to others as they discuss difficulties they may be having coping with their loss and can seek opportunities to learn new ways of approaching challenges and situations that have come up as a result of the suicide death. This includes: looking for experience dealing with secondary losses, how to handle the things people say to suicide survivors, what you can do to handle difficult anniversaries, special occasions, or “tender days”, and getting help with processing feelings often associated with a suicide loss (including guilt, anger, shame, blame, self-doubt, fear, abandonment, relief, etc.). Our group provides a safe and confidential space to exchange ideas and support in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory, and inclusive environment.

We all share a common experience—the loss of someone close to us by a suicide death. Race, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, military or veteran status, physical disability, the presence of a mental health disorder (our own or a loved one’s), religion, or politics should not be things that further divide us as we grieve. We gather together as loss survivors – we are former spouses or partners; parents; grandparents; children; siblings; aunts or uncles; cousins; friends; co-workers; doctors, dentists, nurses, counselors or therapists; neighbors; etc. – our relationship with those we lost does not matter. Our group exists as a safe space to share our experiences and our feelings – including those feelings and experiences that others who have not experienced the loss of a loved one by suicide may not understand.
